Cancer touches many lives, often in ways that are deeply personal and challenging. For MP Plant Group, the fight against cancer is not just a cause but a commitment rooted in family experience and community support. In 2024, we proudly sponsor two of our staff members, Katelyn Patterson and Kai Cockburn, as they take part in the Race for Life event in Newcastle on Sunday, 14th July. This post shares our story, the reasons behind our involvement, and the hope that drives us forward.

Why We Support the Race for Life
Supporting cancer charities is more than fundraising for us. It is a way to give back to the organizations that stood by our family during difficult times. Vicky Patterson, co-owner of MP Plant Group, was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma in 2017. Her journey through nearly five years of treatment was filled with uncertainty, hope, and resilience. The support from Macmillan Cancer Support was invaluable, providing comfort and guidance not only to Vicky but also to her family and colleagues.
Our company hosts Macmillan coffee mornings every 20th February, raising funds and awareness. These events, along with sponsoring the Race for Life, allow us to contribute to vital cancer research and patient support services. We believe every effort counts when it comes to fighting cancer and supporting those affected.
Personal Stories That Inspire Us
Vicky’s Story
Vicky’s battle with cancer deeply affected our family and workplace. The diagnosis in 2017 was a shock that changed everything. For years, we faced the emotional rollercoaster of treatment cycles, hoping each round of chemotherapy would be the last. The experience brought our team closer, as every staff member remembers the day they learned about Vicky’s diagnosis. Her strength and determination inspire us to keep supporting cancer causes.
In 2023, Vicky’s mother was also diagnosed with cancer. After more than a year of treatment, she is now cancer-free and recovering well. This recent victory reinforces why we continue to raise funds and awareness. Every person involved in the Race for Life has someone they are running for, and this is ours.
Katelyn’s Story
Katelyn Patterson, one of our staff members running in the Race for Life, also has a personal connection to cancer. Her mother battled cancer when Katelyn was between 13 and 16 years old. Balancing the challenges of teenage life, school exams, and family worries was tough. Support from cancer charities like Macmillan helped Katelyn and her family cope during those years.
In 2023, Katelyn’s grandmother was diagnosed with cancer. The feelings of dread and frustration were intense, especially after the family had recently overcome cancer with Vicky. Thankfully, her grandmother is now doing well after treatment. Katelyn’s experience shows how cancer affects multiple generations and why ongoing support is crucial.

The Impact of Community Support
Cancer affects not only those diagnosed but also their families, friends, and colleagues. The support network built around patients can provide strength and comfort during difficult times. Organizations like Macmillan Cancer Support offer practical help, emotional support, and resources that make a real difference.
By sponsoring Katelyn and Kai, MP Plant Group shows how businesses can play a role in community health. Our involvement is a reminder that cancer is a shared challenge, and together, we can work toward better outcomes for everyone affected.
Looking Ahead with Hope
As we prepare for the Race for Life 2024, we reflect on the journeys of those we know and love. The fight against cancer is ongoing, but so is the hope inspired by survivors and supporters. Our commitment to this cause is a tribute to the strength of our family and the power of community.
