Owning and managing a heavy goods vehicle (HGV) like Sylvia, our 2004 Scania wagon, has been a journey full of challenges and rewards. Taking on an older wagon was a big risk, but the experience has shown just how much work goes into keeping such a vehicle running smoothly. From planning routes to staying on top of services and MOTs, managing Sylvia has required dedication and careful attention. The investment in maintenance has been significant, but it has paid off in many ways.

The challenges of managing Sylvia

When we first bought Sylvia, we knew she would need a lot of work. Older wagons demand more than just driving skills; they require constant care and planning. Here are some of the key challenges we faced:

  • Route planning: Unlike smaller vehicles, HGVs need routes that consider weight limits, low bridges, and road restrictions. This means more time spent researching and planning trips.

  • Maintenance and servicing: Sylvia needs regular servicing to stay roadworthy. This includes oil changes, brake checks, and tire replacements. Missing an MOT or service could mean costly fines or downtime.

  • Unexpected repairs: Older vehicles often need repairs that come out of nowhere. We’ve had to be ready to fix issues quickly to avoid delays.

Despite these challenges, we made sure Sylvia was always well looked after. The money spent on maintenance has kept her reliable and ready for any job.

Sylvia’s many roles and adventures

Sylvia has been more than just a wagon for haulage. She has taken on a variety of roles that show her versatility and strength:

  • Training and testing: Sylvia has been used extensively for driver training and vehicle testing. This has helped new drivers gain experience with HGVs in a controlled environment.

  • Recovery missions: One memorable adventure was when Sylvia recovered our fitter and his van from the side of the road. It was a tricky situation, but Sylvia handled it with ease.

  • Long-distance trips: Sylvia once drove all the way to Scotland to deliver an old army wagon to a museum. This trip tested her endurance and reliability over long distances.

  • Moving plant and machinery: Around the North East, Sylvia has been essential in moving heavy plant and machinery, supporting construction and industrial projects.

Each of these adventures has added to Sylvia’s story and proven that the risk we took was worth it.

What managing Sylvia has taught us

Looking after Sylvia has taught us valuable lessons about responsibility and preparation. Here are some takeaways from our experience:

  • Regular checks prevent bigger problems: Staying on top of services and MOTs keeps the vehicle safe and avoids expensive repairs.

  • Planning saves time and money: Careful route planning avoids delays and legal issues.

  • Versatility is key: Having a vehicle that can handle different tasks makes it a valuable asset.

  • Investing in equipment pays off: Spending money on maintenance and care ensures the vehicle lasts longer and performs better.

Sylvia’s story is a reminder that managing an HGV is about more than just driving. It’s about commitment, planning, and care.
