Starting work at height requires more than just courage—it demands proper training to ensure safety and efficiency. Upright MEWP training focuses on teaching operators how to use mobile elevating work platforms safely. These platforms include scissor lifts, vertical mast lifts, and push-around platforms, all designed to help workers reach elevated areas securely.

Understanding Upright MEWPs

Upright MEWPs are vertical access machines that provide a stable platform for working at height. Unlike boom lifts that extend horizontally, these machines move straight up and down. Common types include:

  • Scissor lifts: Platforms that raise vertically using crossed supports.

  • Vertical mast lifts: Compact machines with a single mast for vertical movement.

  • Push-around platforms: Lightweight, manually moved lifts for indoor use.

Knowing the differences helps operators choose the right equipment for the task and environment.

Safe Set-Up and Operation

Proper set-up is crucial to prevent accidents. Operators learn how to:

  • Position the machine on firm, level ground.

  • Check for overhead hazards like power lines or beams.

  • Use outriggers or stabilizers if available.

  • Operate controls smoothly to avoid sudden movements.

For example, before raising a scissor lift, the operator must ensure the area is clear and the platform is stable. This reduces the risk of tipping or collisions.

Pre-Use Inspections and Hazard Management

Before using any MEWP, a thorough inspection is essential. Training covers how to check:

  • Hydraulic systems for leaks.

  • Tires and wheels for damage.

  • Safety devices such as emergency stop buttons.

  • Fall protection equipment like harnesses.

Identifying hazards at height is another key part. Operators learn to spot risks such as uneven ground, slippery surfaces, or overhead obstructions. Managing these hazards keeps everyone safe.

Safe Working Practices at Height

Working at height involves careful movement and control. Training emphasizes:

  • Moving the platform slowly and steadily.

  • Avoiding overreaching or leaning outside the guardrails.

  • Using fall protection correctly when required.

  • Communicating clearly with ground personnel.

For instance, when lifting materials, operators must ensure loads are secure and balanced to prevent falls or equipment damage.

Emergency Procedures and Legal Responsibilities

Knowing what to do in an emergency can save lives. The training includes:

  • How to lower the platform safely if the controls fail.

  • Procedures for rescuing a stranded operator.

  • Reporting incidents promptly.

Operators also learn about their legal duties under UK health and safety regulations. This includes understanding the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) guidelines and following company policies.
